About Us
Leadership Education at Duke Divinity, founded in January 2008, cultivates thriving communities that are signs, foretastes and instruments of the reign of God. We design and deliver educational services that develop three interrelated capacities for:
- Traditioned innovation, rooted in the story of the Trinity, that invigorates the present and envisions the future by honoring the church’s past.
- Transformative leadership, responsive to God through the development of virtues and practices, that equips people to advance the church’s mission.
- Vibrant institutions, led by hopeful and imaginative people, that act as bearers of tradition, incubators of leadership and laboratories of learning.
Our mission is to strengthen the ecology of Christian institutions that play pivotal roles in enabling U.S. congregations and pastors to flourish in their ministries. We aim to create lasting change by working in diverse contexts -- in North Carolina and across the country, with future and current leaders -- using expertise from disciplines as varied as theology, business, sociology and the arts.
Leadership Education develops services in partnership with Christian leaders throughout the church. We work not only with congregational clergy and laity, but also with executives in denominations, seminaries, Christian non-profit organizations and other institutions.
The services we deliver -- which include an online magazine, open-application programs and custom-designed educational experiences -- build on the strengths of the Divinity School and engage such topics as pastoral excellence and wellness, rural communities, Hispanic ministry, youth ministry, reconciliation and end-of-life care.
Support is provided by a major grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. and on-going funding from The Duke Endowment as well as other donors.
