Faith & Leadership is an online, biweekly learning resource for Christian leaders. We publish thought-provoking content for pastors, professors, denominational leaders, lay leaders and leaders of nonprofits. We are always on the lookout for new writers and new stories.
Most of our content is Christian. However, we are open to stories about creative and innovative leadership in other spheres that our audience of Christian leaders can learn from.
What kind of content do you publish?
Articles
For our journalism features, we are looking for stories of vibrant ministries, churches or nonprofits that are rooted in tradition but adapting and innovating in new and engaging ways. Our feature articles are typically 1,500-2,000 words.
Examples:
Proclaiming the liberation narrative of God through church art
Sharing a building leads to a shared mission for an AME church and a Latino congregation
Dementia ministry in Georgia serves as a model for churches to care for the caregivers
Essays
We are looking for thoughtful narrative essays on topics relevant to Christian leaders. Our essays are typically 800-1,000 words.
Examples:
Kara K. Root: The 20-second gift of washing your hands
Arionne Yvette Williams: It's not the church's job to decide who belongs
A. Trevor Sutton: Small steps can help improve your ministry's online presence
Jessica Young Brown: Ministers cannot thrive if they neglect themselves
Q&As
Pitch us a fascinating leader that you will interview, then transcribe and edit the conversation. Our Q&As are typically 1,000-1,500 words.
Examples:
James K.A. Smith: What do our institutions teach us to love?
Peter Hill: Looking beyond ourselves and our church walls to find humility
Lee Wellington: Faith leaders can help shift the narrative of manufacturing
What don’t you want?
We do not publish sponsored content or republish material from other publications. We are not a blog. We do not publish book reviews or poetry. Only rarely do we accept sermons or stories set outside the United States.
How much will you pay?
We pay $400 for essays and typically $2,000 for feature articles. We also pay for mileage, parking and occasional preapproved other expenses.
What denominations are you interested in?
We publish stories about all denominations. And, as noted above, not all stories have to focus on a Christian topic or group.
How can I write for you?
If you want to work with us, please read our content and take a look at our topics page before pitching an idea. The examples posted above are representative of what we publish.
Send a detailed pitch (1-2 paragraphs that get to the heart of your story, essay or Q&A) to leadership@div.duke.edu. We will do our best to respond within eight weeks.
Do you accept simultaneous submissions?
We prefer that you pitch to us exclusively. However, we understand that writers sometimes submit to multiple publications at once. If that is the case, please let us know upfront that you have submitted the work to other places.
