Update: Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie is the general secretary/president of the National Council of Churches
Vashti Murphy McKenzie was the first female bishop in the history of the AME Church and and the first female to serve as President of the Council of Bishops and President of the General Board. President Obama appointed her to the advisory council to the White House Office for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. She retired from active service in the AME Church in 2021.
